Practical Medical Astrology: 2 February – 13 April 2025

– Twelve Consecutive Sundays –

2 Feb. to 13 Apr. 2025

presented by Richard Fidler

It is often claimed that Hippocrates, the so called father of medicine, declared that “a physician without knowledge of astrology is better called a fool than a physician”. There is absolutely no question about it, ancient medicine was steeped in astrology, and yet not only is astrology no longer taken seriously in academia and in common medical practice, astro-medical knowledge has also withered within the astrological community and among astrological practitioners generally.

Astrology is the baby that was thrown out with the bathwater of medieval medical superstition. This course is an attempt to gather together some of the glowing embers of this forgotten knowledge, in order to kindle it back into a flame.

This is a vast subject. There’s so much fascinating history and there’s so much that has to understood to arrive at anything like real insight into this topic, not to speak of developing discerning skill in the applied art and science of medical astrology. We’re seeking and cultivating Medical Astrology here together through this course. It is being developed, not revealed.

In fact, it is hoped that this course will establish the foundation for an ongoing program of astro-medical research via Sidereus Academy, involving collaboration between astrologers and qualified medical practitioners and people in medical academia.

Part 1

We’ll delve into some of the rich history of medical astrology. This is not only interesting from the perspective of the particular methods they used centuries ago, but also the social and cultural context within which astro-medicine was traditionally practised. We will also note significant modern developments and contributions to this field, in particular the Cosmobiology of Reinhold Ebertin. His Combination of Stellar Influences contains valuable insights and descriptions of various pathologies. We will reflect on the profundity and value of astrology as a symbolic language that can illumine the relationship between psychological and physiological processes and functions. This can help us to glimpse the more internal root causes of external and physical discomfort.

Part 2

There are many different astrological methodologies that are to a greater or lesser extent applied in the realm of Medical Astrology. We will define some specific astrological principles and approaches that will be emphasized in this course. We’ll focus on aspects and midpoints in Western astrology while also delving into approaches rooted in Jyotish or Vedic astrology. We will identify the most important anatomical and physiological correspondences in astrological symbolism, as well as the congenital and temporal factors pertaining to health and disease. We will analyze many dozens of specific cases with all this in mind, both case studies prepared for the course as well as cases provided by the group.

Part 3

In the final stage of this course we’ll immerse ourselves in some of the nitty gritty of specific medical paradigms, such as Ayurveda, and it’s close relationship with Jyotish. We’ll also look at more modern systems, like homeopathy, that work with the concept of vibration or frequency. The astro-diagnostic procedure was considered in the second part of the course, but now we want to know about the medicine and therapeutic processes that can address the ailments or pathologies that astrology has helped us identify and understand. Medical Astrology is as much an art as a science, and in the final stage of the course we’ll attempt to sythesize the many considerations that are essential to a practical and functional astro-medical methodology.
